Project Description

Client: Canberra Airport Group Pty Ltd
Project value: $50 million
Date of completion: 2015

The challenge: Operated by TFE Hotels under the Vibe brand, the hotel features 191 rooms including 12 suites and nine apartments. Features include a soaring atrium boasting a large reception area, bar, restaurant and state-of-the-art conference facilities.

Bates Smart’s award winning design draws inspiration from its airport location. The hotel is an eight storey building containing a carpark and other ancillary hotel areas on the ground floor. The upper ground level lobby contains a reception area, a hotel restaurant and meeting rooms. There are six levels of accommodation on the levels above.

Our solution: Exova Defire’s alternative solutions allowed the Bates Smart design to come to life with long corridors bounding the atrium in the residential levels. The fire safety strategy, alongside liaison with ACT Fire and Rescue, Airservices Australia and the Airport Building Controller, included a performance-based smoke exhaust system which utilised computational fluid dynamic modelling of the atrium space, reduced fire rating requirements of the kitchen and restaurant areas, fire brigade intervention, and hydraulic, electrical and mechanical rationalisations. The overall result was a prominent and unique building located at the entry corridor to the Canberra International Airport precinct.
