Client: Costco Wholesale Australia Pty Ltd
Project value: $35 million per location
Completion: Auburn and Canberra 2011, other locations are ongoing
The challenge: Costco Wholesale is an international chain of membership warehouses that carry quality, brand name merchandise at substantially lower prices than are typically found at conventional wholesale or retail stores.
Costco Wholesale represents a unique fire safety challenge as a result of the hazard associated with warehouse style storage and a large customer population. The Auburn site also included Costco’s Australian office headquarters.
Our solution: Exova Defire worked with the Costco team to develop fire safety strategies which met the performance requirements of the BCA in the context of the Costco business model for the warehouses in Auburn and Casula, NSW, Canberra, ACT, Ringwood, VIC, North Lakes, QLD and the depot in Huntingwood, NSW.
We provided detailed assessments of smoke hazard management, evacuation and fire fighting provisions with a view to creating a benchmark for future Costco developments.
