What we do Defire provides a specialised building and infrastructure consultancy service in performance based fire safety design. We develop innovative and practical fire safety solutions based on science and engineering principles and the sound body of research available to the fire safety industry.
Fire safety is one of the major regulatory hurdles for new and existing buildings. Compliance with the prescriptive requirements of the Building Code of Australia and associated Australian standards often limits designers in achieving their vision and goals for a building project.
The building code requirements are generic and conservative in nature as they are intended to cover all possible design scenarios and are often based on the assumed worst case.
At Defire, we use a performance based approach to customise a package of alternative fire safety measures for a particular design. This allows the client to achieve their objectives but still maintain the level of fire safety required by the building code and approval authorities.
How we do it Our team provides timely and practical design advice combined with the use of advanced design methodologies and software packages to predict the events and conditions produced by real life building fires. We also develop in-house programs to rationalise and solve specific problems.
Client outcomes Through early involvement in the design process and proactive fire safety design advice, we are able to provide greater flexibility for building designers. We can also deliver more cost effective solutions by rationalising the fire safety measures required in coordination with the architectural planning and building services design.

- Three of Defire’s engineers are Chartered Professional Engineers (CPEng) registered on the National Professional Engineers Register — Fire safety engineering (NPER)
- Five of our engineers are accredited certifiers through the Building Professionals Board (BPB) – C10 fire safety engineering compliance, two engineers are Registered Professional Engineers Queensland (RPEQ), and two engineers are Registered Building Practitioners Victoria (Engineer – Fire Safety)
- Defire is a member firm of the Fire Protection Association of Australia (FPAA)
